At the turn-of-the-century, Professor Franklin Hooper began construction of this magnificent neo-classical mansion. The finishing touches were never fully completed due to financial and personal reasons. Over the ensuing years, the mansion served a variety of purposes as a single family residence and as a boys home. In February of 2001, the mansion was purchased by Jill and Creg Dance, saving it from complete decay and ruin. As fitting with its origin, the mansion once again experienced a turn-of-the-century transformation. A complete restoration from top to bottom began and was completed in 2004. The original first floor drawings were found and every effort was made to complete the construction detail to the original plans.

The Pillars & Porches mansion is clearly a local legend when it comes to ghost stories and tales of being a haunted house. We have enjoyed listening to all the hair-raising stories but have yet to experience any exciting times of our own.

Directions

  • Interstate 91 to Exit 5 (Westminster/Walpole)
  • Go East to Rt. 5 (Stop Sign)
  • Take Rt. 5 South to Rt. 123 East
  • Follow Rt. 123 (Over the Connecticut River) to Rt. 12 (Stop Sign)
  • Turn South onto Rt. 12 and drive to a blinking yellow light (South St.)
  • Turn East and proceed until arriving at a stop sign
  • Turn Right (South) onto Wentworth Rd. and travel 1.5 miles to Pillars & Porches which is located on the Left (South) side of Wentworth Rd

If traveling North from Keene, NH

  • Travel North on Rt. 12 until reaching blinking yellow light (South St.)
  • At this point follow the directions stated above
